Debt Consolidation Canada

What is debt consolidation?

Debt consolidation is a financial process wherein debts are combined into one. Mostly, this needs additional funding. Get a credit card balance transfer, debt consolidation, or a home equity loan, for example.

The main goals of consolidating debts are to simplify the repayment terms and reduce or eliminate the interest applied to your debt. Remember that to be eligible for this debt relief option in Canada, you must have a decent credit score.

Debt Consolidation Program in Canada

You will need a certified Credit Counsellor from a non-profit credit counseling agency to set up a Debt Consolidation Program (DCP) for you. Under the DCP, the agency will talk to your lenders on your behalf to reduce the interest on debts that are unsecured. Your payments will also be rounded up into lower monthly payments.

Consolidating Debts

Benefits of DCP

Debt consolidation service will cover your unsecured debts, including unsecured lines of credit, credit cards, salary loans, and other types of unsecured loans. It provides the following advantages:

  • You only have to pay one lower monthly payment you can afford.
  • It provides a shorter repayment period, usually 24 to 48 months, for DCP.
  • You can avoid insolvency which can considerably impact your financial situation in the future.
  • DCP will stop or dramatically lower your unsecured debts’ interest rate. This will help you recover and save over time.
  • You will no longer receive calls from collectors.
  • There is no need to worry about missing due dates because payments to creditors are timely, automatic, and fully tracked.
  • You will not be stressed in facing your creditors because a certified Credit Counsellor will negotiate for you.
  • A completion date is set under the debt consolidation program in Canada. This will help you develop your financial goals.

Is Debt Consolidation the right option for you?

Below are the signs that debt consolidation is the best option for your debt relief in Canada:

  • You have a good credit score. In Canada, according to Equifax, a good credit score is usually between 660 to 724. This way, you can get favorable terms and lower interest rates.
  • Your debts have high interest. According to Experian data, the average interest rate for a personal loan is 9.41%, and 16% for a credit card. Consolidating your debt can give you lower interest charges.
  • You have a repayment plan. Debt consolidation loans have set repayment terms. You will not have to pay your debts forever.

Meanwhile, debt consolidation may not work for you if:

  • You have no plans to change your spending habits. One of the dangers of a debt consolidation loan is it gives false security of having fewer debts. If you cannot control yourself, you may be tempted to use your credit card again and spend beyond your means.
  • Your credit score is bad.
  • You only have a few debts. If you can settle your debts in the next six to twelve months, a debt consolidation loan may not be the greatest option for debt relief.

I would just like to thank Suma for really making feel comfortable throughout this entire process. Everyone tells you to watch out for gimmicks, quick fixes, and everything else that comes with Debt. Ive had other companies who had made promises and under delivered. However Suma and her team are quick to provide the right answers and guide everyone in a way towards better credit. She has made it seamless with great communication and availability. I have personally referred her to several of my closest friends and i would recommend her to anyone else looking for consolidation.

No, in fact, this is one of the great advantages of a Debt Consolidation Program. All wage garnishment will stop from the day you filed the proposal.

The effect on your credit score is not going to be severe. Your credit score will most probably go to R7 Rating and will remain in your credit report for another 3 years after you completed the program. This means that it will not be permanent and you will still be able to rebuild your credit score.

This varies depending on the proposal you will be discussing with the help of a certified debt relief agency. It is also worth noting that debt consolidation cannot exceed more than 5 years.

If a debt is shared, you need to file a joint debt consolidation offer to your creditors. However, in most cases, in which the debts are individually incurred will have no impact on your spouse.

After three missed payments, your debt arrangement with creditors will be broken and you will end up getting chased again for the original debt amount plus interest.

A debt consolidation offer can be paid off earlier if you can. In this way, you receive your “Certificate of Completion” sooner and you can immediately start rebuilding your credit score.
